Central Asian Studies Department invites you to the Epics as Heritage workshop conducted by the Central Asian Studies Institute (CASI).

Broader Central Asia 鈥� or central Eurasia 鈥� is the homeland of rich Turkic and Mongolian epic traditions that have been documented, 鈥減reserved鈥� and published under the auspices of either the Soviet Union or socialist China.

Nowadays this 鈥渆pic heritage鈥� is enthusiastically promoted, hotly disputed, and fervently branded at UNESCO, with few if any attempts to problematize the literary representations of orality, or the creation of 鈥渘ational epics.鈥� This workshop aims to open a discussion on these issues and to ground these discussions of epics as literature or epics as heritage in a broad comparative context.

Workshop participants: George Fitzherbert (University of Oxford), Svetlana Jacquesson (缅北强奸), Michael Long (independent scholar), Talant Mawkanuli (University of Washington), James Plumtree (缅北强奸-CEU), and Jonathan Ratcliffe (ANU).
