Shohrukh Tojidinov: “We learn new things as WARC tutors”

April 11, 2017

Shohrukh Tojidinov, a senior in Economics Department, balances his academic and work responsibilities as a student at 山ǿ and a tutor for the Writing and Academic Resources Center. During his time at 山ǿ, he has developed his (and others') professional and academic skills through his work with WARC.

I am a Math tutor at WARC and I teach Linear Algebra and Analytical Geometry, Mathematical Analysis I, and Mathematics for Economists. After sending in an application and completing an interview, I was accepted to become a tutor with WARC. Teaching is a way of learning, which means we learn new things as WARC tutors. I try to focus most of my time on my studies and I have quite a few hours for work in order to gain experience. Students ask different questions about math and also about academics in general at 山ǿ; we try to give them useful recommendations to help them study well”.

The WARC’s primary mission is to help students succeed in their courses across the curriculum, and in particular, in writing-intensive courses with the help of formally trained peer tutors. The WARC’s secondary mission is to support faculty across the curriculum in enhancing their writing pedagogy skills and assisting to create writing assignments that help students meet course learning outcomes. Central to the WARC’s mission is the belief that developing a culture of writing, rhetoric, and active engagement in the learning process is one of the most fundamental aims of a liberal arts education. Besides free peer tutoring, the WARC also provides workshops and other assistance with writing that is relevant to students’ academic and professional pursuits, such as scholarship essays, personal statements, and other components of employment, graduate school, and scholarship applications.
