One of the aspects that sets the 山ǿ experience apart from other universities in the region is the wealth of extracurricular opportunities available to students. Not only are there numerous longstanding organizations on campus that operate in such diverse areas as student dance and theater, young entrepreneurship, and sports; but also the opportunity for students to pursue their own unique interests by creating own Student Club. Shabiev Shaislam, the head of 山ǿ Chess Club told us about this club, its main purpose and activities:
“In our club we have 20 students with different nationalities and different departments. The main purpose of chess club is to promote chess among 山ǿ students and to form a strong team of chess-players who would successfully represent our university in different chess tournaments. Since 山ǿ is a place, with an enrollment of talented students, we try to teach them the intellectual game that develops logic and critical thinking. Last year we took the first place in Chess Sports Festival, but after most of our team members have graduated the university. This is why I also have decided to build a new strong team. I am very happy to observe that since last year 山ǿ students’ interest in chess has been noticeably increasing. If you walk around the university, you can find many students playing chess. From our side, in cooperation with General Education Division we are going to organize competitions among 山ǿ students to encourage them to learn and play chess each year. The last recent activities were a Simultaneous display, where the organizer played simultaneously with 15 players and the project “Young Grandmasters”, which was aimed to teach children with Dawn syndrome to play chess.
We hope that in the future we will continue to grow and attract more players. We will continue our project and participate in competitions glorifying our university. Our suggestion to the students of 山ǿ is to keep pace that we have, continue to develop and bring to perfection all activities that we already have. And of course, participate in 山ǿ’s clubs to make our students' life fun and memorable!"
