On February 13, 2016 students from the Environmental Management and Sustainable Development (EMSD) program went on a field trip to the mountains near the "Polytech" ski base.
Students practiced on-site measurements of water quality in the river. They also went over procedures for correctly taking water samples (probes). Students also completed training on field equipment such as dosimeter-radiometers (for measuring levels of radiation) and GPS devices (for determining precise geographic coordinates of each sample). The students received useful field training, spent time relaxing outdoors, and got some fresh air. After the practicum, students had some time for downhill skiing. Overall, the students were very happy with their trip.
In an interview after the trip, Bermet Begilerova, a sophomore student of EMSD program said, 鈥淚 was very fascinated when the EMSD department announced their plans to take a trip up to the mountains! The trip was a combination of school work and vacation. I seized the opportunity to act as an environmental manager during the practical part of the trip. On our trip, I used specialized professional tools to measure water quality for the first time. At first glance, it seems like it would be easy to carry out such investigations using all these gadgets, but it鈥檚 essential to have a background in environmental science so that you follow the specific standards and laws. I am glad that out professors from the EMSD department have attracted students to the practical side of education.鈥
