Students of Environmental Chemistry class tested water of Big Chui Canal

May 15, 2015

On 21st of April, students of Environmental Chemistry class went on an exciting field trip instead of the usual class lecture. In the Big Chui Canal, they collected water samples, identifying GPS coordination of the location. The Chair of the Environmental Management and Sustainable Development Program, Dr. Zheenbek Kulenbekov, and Lab Assistant/Instructor, MSc. Baktiar Asanov were leading the field work class.

The students examined several water quality parameters, including carbonate ions which show acidity and base of water, TSP (Total Suspended Particulate) which shows the weight of suspended particulate in air, Redox potential which is the other water quality parameters, and etc. Then, in groups of two, they carried out experiments using chemical elements and tested the pH level (acidity) of collected water samples.

鈥淚n clear, we made independent experiments on water using the chemical reagents. We have searched for iron, carbonate anions, free acidity and total acidity. We ended up having an amazing time together,鈥 鈥 one of the Environmental Chemistry students, Aziz Aitbaev says.
